Actually I think I saw something about electrolytic etching on a page about some steampunk boxes. For your information, this gave me an idea when I consulted fo a company wanting to rough up some surfaces for creating better medical implants... You never know what might come out of that!

That doesn't surprise me, there are some extremely enterprising people making real world steampunk stuff. there's a gorgeous fender stratocaster out there somewhere that has an etched brass pickguard... its very effective. Here's a link to the making page [link] ... jake von slatt is an excellent maker and he even has a page devoted to his experiments in etching [link]

there's something kinda cyclic about retro future design inspiring modern design... very cool! let me know how it goes!
