The Pocket Aether Perambulator by Technohippy The Pocket Aether Perambulator by Technohippy
'The Pocket Æther Perambulator'

Finally complete after over 6 months of work. This is a combination of several large renders so download is totally recommended to get all the detail. I would like to note that there are some artifacts which have been left as an indication that this is a mere 3d model. (a gentleman's bowtie is never perfect!!)

The dimensions for this are based on my trusty Nokia N95, It opens much like a netbook and boasts the following features.

*Fob ring - for attaching to a gentlemans pocket chain
*External Chronograph - with visible mechanism
*External Camera Obscura - for capturing magical images which might take ones fancy
*Internal Camera Obscura - for presenting images of your own visage whilst communing over the Ætheric web
*Miniaturised QWERTY typewriter - to aid in the preparation of Æthergrammes
*Ætheric plasma picture frame - for viewing the Ætheric web
*Internal magnetic resonance speaker/microphone
*Dedicated buttons for accessing the Ætheric web
*Exquisite external engraving and name plate bearing the following information 'The Pocket Æther Perambulator - enabling communion across Ætheric space. As presented by Prof. A. J. G. Wellsby'

Go here [link] for the steampunk mobile phone gallery to see other images from this model. single images from this presentation will be submitted in due course

Modelling - Sketchup
rendering - Kerkythea

I have to write some more here, because it's not just the render that is so stunning. It's the piece as well. I am a gadget freak, and I'd kill to have this piece of kit. It looks like something Sherlock Holmes should have, made by one of Jules Verne's fictional geniuses. The shape, The silver, The font on the lovely buttons, the curved glass on the screen, the coloring and the engraving.. All of it is so beautifully designed and composed, not to mention the watch. I can vividly imagine the feel and weight of it in my hand, cool metal on the skin... Fantastic.

You are most welcome. Now.. If only Nokia had some vision.. There's a danish company that was in the media a couple of months back with a solid gold phone with a retail price of some 150K USD.
They'd be visionary enough to make something like this, because if you made it into a phone it's within technological reach I would think. It's a timeless piece, with the marriage of victorian age and 1940's elements(the camera and speaker I presume) and future technology. This makes you into a very good industrial designer as well as an acomplished 3d artist. I reckon you could sell this concept given the right buyer, cos Damn... I just want one and so would every other gadget freak.

I wish I knew where to start with selling this design! should look into it really :D head in the clouds too much unfortunately.

been looking at your spaceships and you are no mean designer yourself, so I take your praise to be no small thing!

I want it too... badly (although it would have to operate android as I appear to be addicted to that now)

That sir is just soooooo nice, I do think we have lost the art of making things that are functional but beautiful and made to last, your representation of the perambulator is beautiful, makes me want to go back in time lol, hope to see more of this art in the future, cheers friend.

why thank you sir! I love my gadgets, I just wish they weren't built out of cheap plastic and that i wasn't required to upgrade them all the time. at least with smartphones there is a convergence of technologies so we don't have to carry so many bits of plastic in our pockets!

thanks for your kind words and welcome to the Kerkythea group, your work is most impressive!

I use MLT by default, for this I Think I used MLT (BPT) because it has better caustics and is better at the close up stuff.

using globals or HDRI's is a great way to add realism, kerky comes with some preinstalled. There are plenty HDRI's at hdr labs which can be used in kerky too.

yep thats the idea, once you have realistic lighting, its a lots easier to make sense of the materials. metals 'look' like metals, wood 'looks' like wood

Great Scot!! You are very skilled, good chap.

Now, if you could tell me where I could purchase such a device. What's that? This isn't a photograph? Now, how am I supposed to traverse the Ætheric web if I go on my expeditions?

Kind sir, you are generous with your praise.

Alas no, this is not a photograph, it seems the Ætheric web will remain out of collective grasp for the present time.

Once I am able to engage an artisan to fabricate the device, it shall become available for purchase at a not-inconsiderable consideration, shall we say!

The amazing thing about this is that I thought I was looking at an actual 3D item that that was put together with existing materials. I read that it's a digitally produced image. That just blows my mind. It looks so real. I would love to tackle trying to produce an actual working model.
(On second thought) naahh.. It looks like too much work.

i've considered making it in many ways, most viable of which is 3d printing. Its not going to happen at the moment though, as you say... too much work!
